We are those
By Lebo Mashile
We are those born in heartbeats
Never to die again
We sleep and return as diamonds
The earth is primal
She needs to stay close to her kin
We are the ripples caused
When dawn dares to imagine
In infinite directions
For some it’s hard to fathom
The roots where I begin
The silent wish to grow
Is stitched into my seams
The way the fuel of life is hidden
At the far end of dreams
Pieces of survival are provided
Flowing as promise deems
As does the light of your arrival
Through the web of vile schemes
With our minds intertwined
We weave a human tapestry
As tall as ancestry
As tough as urban trees
And the legacies transformed
Beneath her shade
Thriving in concrete crevices
Created where others fade
The earth is immortal
And so are we
The silver tongued
