The State of the Nation

By Lebo Mashile for Mail & Guardian

February 2009

It would take at least two 9-11s and a tsunami for South Africans to be thrown into a state of panic. We live in the most violent society on the planet that is not at war. We are used to living with a sense of fear hovering around us. We are adept at working through insecurity, particularly when the odds are against us. We find ways of insulating ourselves, cocooning ourselves from the threat, and creating a comfort zone amidst the madness. We are so good at finding security within... Read More

A South African Obama

By Lebo Mashile for True Love Magazine

March 2009

It’s amazing how quickly the pendulum swings. Just over a decade ago, South Africans rode firmly on the crest of this country’s democratic victory, and as a result, in the eyes of the world, we were fly. It felt good to travel internationally and let people know that you come from South Africa. Yes, THAT African country where Mandela comes from, where we didn’t kill or kick out our colonizers and their kinfolk, and where the transition to a black government took... Read More

Sex and the single lady

By Lebo Mashile for True Love Magazine

February 2009

The only female members of the animal kingdom who have sex for pleasure are dolphins and women.  While the other creatures we share this planet with have intercourse for the sole purpose of pro-creation, women and dolphins have sex for a myriad of physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological reasons. Sex is a form of communication and communion. At its highest level, sex becomes lovemaking, an art form where the many dimensions of our complex beings fuse with those of another. As... Read More

30 gifts for the 30 year old woman

By Lebo Mashile for True Love Magazine

January 2009

As 2009 draws to an end, I am reminded that my 30th birthday is just a short walk away from New Year. I have decided to give myself 30 gifts this year. These are gifts that anyone can give to them selves at any age, but it took me a while to get here. My gift to you this festive season is an invitation to take whatever you might need from my list.   A relationship with a higher power. For some people it’s Jesus Christ, for others its ancestors. For... Read More

Heavy Matters

By Lebo Mashile for True Love Magazine

November 2008

I am standing at the SAA check in counter, preparing myself for a two hour journey to Cape Town when the stunning almond eyed sister behind the counter gazes up at me and says, “Mara how do you do it?” “How do I do what?” I ask. “How do you have such confidence about your body?” she replies. I am amazed that such a cute creature could be struggling with confidence. She is very pretty and well groomed in the way that airline employees always... Read More

A day in the life of an ordinary diva

By Lebo Mashile for True Love Magazine

October 2008

Imagine this. You wake up early and decide not to take a full bath, because you had one just before you went to bed. You wash up in the sink and then lather your body with your favourite moisturizers and perfumes. You put on a sexy power suit with a frilly blouse and make your way to the office after inhaling a cup of Arabian coffee, a gift from your brother overseas. You longingly think about him and the gang of friends you lost to London as the rich coffee aroma lingers on your... Read More

PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN?

By Lebo Mashile for True Love Magazine

September 2008

Dear South Africa, I am writing to you as someone who loves you dearly. Morale is low. People feel scared, hurt, bewildered, and despondent. The past few months have been very hard on us. Whether it is politics, or petrol prices, the cost of food or an impending Zuma presidency, South Africans of every colour and culture are asking them selves what the future holds. We have watched the main arteries of Johannesburg being torn apart to make room for the Gautrain while people... Read More
